Streetwise in Junee

The Skateboarding Australia Streetwise program came to Junee in January.

Australian skateboarder and coach Dougal Smith was impressed with the talent Junee and surrounding areas had on offer.

"I've got to give a call out to the Riley boys for being probably the most dominant skaters around here. There's been a fair few local rippers" he said.

The young 'Riley boys' Smith was referring to are fifteen year old Sam Riley and his two younger brothers, Jack (12) and Tom (11). The 3 boys have been skating at the Junee skate park for over 5 years and their mum, Di, was at the clinic to watch her three talented boys, and said she is happy that they are all into skateboarding.

Pictured is Jack Riley, one of the participants of the clinic.

Kool Skools Awards Night in Melbourne

Girl in a Drum Encouraged as Outstanding Musical Group

As part of Junee Shire Council's Kool Skools project 2006, five participants and a parent travelled to Melbourne with Community Development Officer Nikki Condon on Friday, 6 October, to attend the Kool Skools 2006 Awards Night at Hamer Hall. 31 schools or councils were involved in recording a CD each at Studio 52, Melbourne, this year.

The awards night was an opportunity to recognise those schools or groups and the bands that were most talented from this years participants. Awards range from best jazz band to best rapper to best female vocal and best pop track. In addition the judges gave a number of special awards.

In its Tenth Year, the Kool Skools project is jointly funded by Studio 52 and the Federal Government Department of Family and Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, JB Hi Fi and Swinburne University, with additional local funding from Junee Shire Council.

For those that attended the awards night it was thrilling to see in the program and hear Junee Shire Council be nominated for two awards, having had no expectation of winning as this is Junee's first year in Kool Skools. Steven Harmon and Ricky Judd were acknowledged for their hard work and creativity with a nomination in the Best Multimedia category. 'Pants Optional' made up of Adam Jacobson, Mitchell Kells and Michael Smith are excited to have reached the nomination stage for 'Best Mainstream Rock Track' - "Go Hard or Go Home" written by Adam and Mitchell.

The biggest cheer for the night went up as the 7 Junee attendees screamed their loudest when The Special Judges Encouragement Award was announced for 'Most Outstanding Musical Group' - 'Girl in a Drum', Junee Shire Council.

Three members of Girl in A Drum were there and made their way to the stage with one of their original songs playing, 'Keep Standing Strong'. They were presented with an award frame and posed for a photograph. In addition, the Best of Kool Skools 2006 double CD was presented, and 'Keep Standing Strong' features on it. For the girls, there were squeals and giggles, and for CDO Nikki Condon a few proud tears too.

Andrea Jones, member of Girl in a Drum said 'It was so unexpected, but great to know we are doing well compared to other participants. We really have to say a huge thank you to Kate and Natasha Higginson who volunteered to help us this past six months.'

Girl in a Drum have gone from not knowing each other very well to an award winning musical group in just six months with the mentoring of Kate and Tash, and support from Junee High School and music teacher Justin Hayward.

‘Imagine next year?' Ricky Judd, member of the group 'Disordinants' said on the trip home. This project has certainly inspired some strong musical talent to come out of the wood work, and has supported developing talent to achieve a performance level.

The value of the project is clear on the faces of the bright eyed young people as we made our way home, listening to their own songs on CD. CD's are available for sale at Council for $10, and will be available with autographs at Illabo show this weekend. Come along and see what all the fuss is about as the three bands perform between 3:00pm and 6:00pm between the Bushman's relays.
