Council puts Athenium at top of the list.

Round two of the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Community Fund has earmarked $1.2M for Junee Shire Council.

Council has received a number of very strong applications from the community, and these will be put forward to government for their determination.

“We have been very pleased with the response from the community, as the projects submitted demonstrate that our community groups in the Shire have clear plans for their clubs, halls and venues and are as keen as we are to see our region grow and prosper,” said Junee Shire General Manager, James Davis.

“One of the large scale projects submitted is the enhancement of the Athenium Theatre with the installation of air-conditioning, which will vastly improve the comfort and attractiveness of the venue. This project was a Council and community preference in Round 1 of the Stronger Country Communities Fund, so we are extremely hopeful that the State Government will endorse the project in this round. Junee will host the regional final of the Royal Agricultural Society Miss Showgirl Competition in March 2019 – so a successful funding application would greatly enhance this event.”

“I have fond memories of assisting community members with the interior painting at the Athenium back in 1996; it was one of my first tasks at Junee Shire Council as a junior officer. The future looks even brighter for the Athenium Theatre now as the community gets behind the need for more improvements in the form of air-conditioning in the theatre!”

The Council has applied on four separate occasions for funding towards these enhancements works over the last two and half years and while those applications were shortlisted, they were unfortunately unsuccessful. We are very close to gaining funding support from the government and the Council will continue to strive to improve Community facilities on behalf of all residents and importantly visitors to the Shire.
