The Community Visitor Scheme aims to enrich the quality of life of residents of aged care homes who are socially isolated or lonely, and would benefit from a friendly visitor. The CVS also helps to establish links between people in aged care homes and their local community. A community visitor is a volunteer who is matched with a resident of an aged care home, and visits them regularly.
Riverina Community College RCC) has been an auspice for this scheme for over twenty (20) years. Our catchment area is across the Riverina encompassing Wagga Wagga, Junee, Gundagai, Tumut, Cootamundra, Harden, Narrandera, Leeton, Griffith and Deniliquin. The college has the largest number of funded places in inland NSW. We are funded for 78 places with an average of 11 visitors per area.
As a community visitor, volunteers assist residents taking part in activities within the aged care facility, share common interests and may even go for a walk or an outing. Activites depend on the health of the resident. Sharing your time and your interests with the resident help them feel better about themselves and enjoy their life more. By befriending an older person living in an aged care home, you have a chance to make a difference to their life – and to your own.
