Landcare
What is Landcare?
Landcare is a community-based approach to managing and restoring our environment, and improving the sustainability of our agricultural activities.
What You Can Do
Biodiversity
- Plant locally native tree and shrub species to attract wildlife and increase biodiversity.
- The Junee Area Landcare Network ‘tree planting guide’ is full of helpful hints on how to successfully plant trees.
Drought
- Increase the perenniality in the landscape by planting trees and perennial (native) gasses.
- Sell stock rather than trying to feed them through drought years
- Deep water our gardens to drought proof them – roots go down further).
- Plant natives in your garden.

Feral Animals
- Contact the Local Land Services for information regarding feral animal control eg fox baiting programs, rabbits, locusts etc.
Habitat Loss
- Protect existing vegetation from damage by stock.
- Don’t collect fire wood, leave timber as habitat for wildlife.
- Don’t fell dead trees, these contain important nest hollows.
- Plan tree planting to link existing vegetation.
Remnant Vegetation Protection
- Limiting stock access to remnant areas , ie crash grazing.
- Controlling weeds.
- Restoring understorey by planting shrubs and grasses.
- Add to remnants by planting perimeter.

Revegetation
- Plant locally native species.
- Plan tree planting to link existing vegetation.

Salinity
- Plant out recharge areas such as rocky hill tops, to reduce the amount of water reaching the water table.
- Plant out boggy discharge areas to reduce high water table.
- Manage crops to reduce fallow areas.
- Plant perennial plants which utilize water year round.
- Don’t water paths and driveway.
- Mulch gardens and deep water once weekly rather than every day.

Soil Acidity
- Your district agronomist can help you with application rates for lime to improve the productivity of cropping paddocks. The Department of Primary Industries also has helpful information on soil acidity.
Soil Erosion
- Manage crops to reduce fallow areas such as stubble retention.
- Fence and plant out gully areas to reduce erosion.
- Manage pastures to maintain at least 70% ground cover at all times.
- Plant trees on steep slopes. Roots help to bind the soil and reduce erosion.
- Fence creek lines to exclude stock and install watering troughs.

Weeds
- Be vigilant with the control of all weeds on your property.
- Notify relevant authority of noxious weeds on public land.
- Don’t dump garden waste in bushland areas or roadsides
Wetland Health
- Fence wetlands to exclude stock.
- In town wash cars on the lawn, not road because stormwater drains lead to the wetland.
- Don’t litter.
