Keeping Our Kids Safe on Regional School Buses

School bus travel is an essential part of life for many regional students across New South Wales — and safety is everyone’s responsibility. Transport for NSW provides clear guidance to help keep students, drivers, and all road users safe on the journey to and from school.

For Drivers:
• Slow down to 40 km/h when bus lights are flashing — children may be crossing nearby.
• Give way to buses pulling out into traffic and keep a safe distance.
• Be extra cautious near informal or regional bus stops that may not be sign-posted.

For Parents & Carers:
• Supervise younger children walking to the stop and hold hands when crossing roads.
• Meet your child at the bus stop, and always

wait until the bus has left before crossing.
• Teach kids to “Stop, Look, Listen, Think” every time they cross a road.

For Students:
• Sit safely and behave respectfully on board — follow the Student Code of Conduct.
• Wear a seatbelt when one is available; many regional buses now have them fitted as part of safety upgrades.

Together, we can make regional bus travel safer for every child. Share this post to help spread the word!
