Salinity in urban areas is increasingly recognized as an issue that can potentially cause significant economic, environmental and social costs in many areas of NSW. Urban salinity indicators are evident in many local government areas including small towns, regional centres and parts of metropolitan western Sydney. Land use planning and thinking strategically can play an important role in minimizing the economic, environmental and social impacts of the interactions between development and urban salinity.
